Why plan printing needs more care than standard documents

A CAD drawing or architectural plan is only useful if it prints at the correct scale with fine detail still legible, which makes file preparation more important here than for most other print jobs. A mistake that would be a minor inconvenience on a standard document, slightly wrong margins or a stretched image, can make a technical drawing genuinely unusable on site.

File formats that print reliably

PDF is generally the most reliable format for plan printing, since it preserves line weights, scale and layout consistently across different software and printers. If you're working from a native CAD file, exporting to PDF before sending it to Star Printers reduces the chance of something rendering differently at print time.

Getting the scale right

Tell us the scale your drawing needs to print at, 1:50, 1:100 or whatever your project requires, and confirm this before we print, since scale is one of the easiest things to get wrong if it isn't stated clearly. A drawing that looks fine on screen can print at the wrong scale if this isn't specified, and an incorrectly scaled plan can cause real problems on site if measurements are taken directly from the printed page.

Choosing a paper size

A0, A1 and A2 are the standard sizes for most plans and drawings, chosen based on how much detail needs to stay legible and how the copy will be used, a site copy handled on location often needs a larger size than a reference copy kept in an office.

Colour or black and white

Many technical drawings print perfectly well in black and white, which is usually the cheaper option, but colour is worth it where colour-coding, highlighted zones or annotations carry real information that would be lost in greyscale.

How many copies do you actually need?

A site copy that gets folded, carried and referred to on location wears out differently to a clean reference copy kept in an office or filed with planning documents. It's worth ordering enough copies for how the plan will genuinely be used, a single site-hardy print plus a smaller number of cleaner office copies, rather than one print expected to survive both uses.
