Flyer sizes and paper weight

Where a business card needs to survive in a wallet, a flyer needs to work in the few seconds someone has before deciding whether to read it or bin it. That changes the priorities: paper weight can be lighter (130–170gsm is standard, keeping print and postage costs down for bulk runs), and the design needs one clear message rather than everything you know about your business.

A4 suits a detailed flyer with several sections of information, such as a menu or a full event programme. A5 is the most common size for a straightforward promotion, cheap to produce in volume and easy to hand out or leave in a display holder. A6 works well for a simple offer, a discount code or a save-the-date, where you need very little space to make the point.

Designing a flyer people actually read

Double-sided printing effectively doubles your space without doubling the paper, useful for a flyer that needs a menu on one side and opening hours or a map on the other. If you are ordering for a leaflet drop or an event handout, order a genuine surplus — a proportion of any print run gets binned, lost or damaged before it does its job.

Where and how you plan to distribute your flyers

Because a flyer gets seconds of attention rather than minutes, hierarchy matters more than detail: one clear headline, one clear image, and one clear next step, whether that's a date, a phone number or a website. Flyers packed with every piece of information you have tend to get glanced at and binned rather than read.

Where a flyer is handed out matters as much as the design. A stack left on a counter or in a holder needs a strong front-facing headline to get picked up at all, while a door-to-door drop needs to work even if someone only glances at it for a second before it goes in the recycling.
