Certificate Printing: Paper Stock and Finishes for Awards and Qualifications

Why certificates need a different approach to everyday print

A certificate is usually meant to be kept, displayed or framed rather than used once and discarded, which changes what matters in the print. Paper weight, finish and overall presentation carry more weight here than for a flyer or a working document, since the whole point of a certificate is to feel appropriately formal and durable.

Choosing a paper weight

Certificates typically use a heavier card stock than standard paper, generally in the 250-350gsm range, giving a stiffer, more substantial sheet that feels intentional rather than printed on an ordinary office printer. A heavier stock also holds up better if the certificate is going to be handled, signed or framed rather than immediately filed away.

Matt, gloss or textured finish

A matt finish gives a clean, understated look that suits most formal certificates and reads as professional without being flashy. A gloss finish makes any colour or gold/silver detailing look more vivid, which can suit an achievement certificate aimed at a younger audience or a more celebratory context. A textured stock, sometimes with a subtle laid or linen pattern, adds a tactile, premium feel that works particularly well for qualifications, awards and formal recognitions.

Foil and border details

Gold or silver foil detailing on a border, seal or heading adds a formal, official feel to a certificate, and it is a common finishing touch for awards, qualifications and achievement certificates. It is worth deciding early whether you want this, since it affects the file setup rather than being something added after printing.

Personalising each certificate

If you need each certificate to carry a different recipient name, date or grade, tell us this when ordering. Star Printers can personalise each certificate individually within the same print run rather than printing a generic template that needs handwriting or adding to afterwards.

Presenting the finished certificate

How a certificate is handed over matters almost as much as the print itself. A certificate presented flat in a card folder or sleeve arrives uncreased and ready to frame, whereas one folded to fit a standard envelope can pick up a crease across the design that is difficult to remove afterwards. If the certificate is being posted rather than handed over in person, ask about a larger envelope or a protective card sleeve so it arrives in the same condition it was printed.
