How to Design a Roller Banner That Works From Across a Room

Design for distance, not for the screen you're designing on

A roller banner is usually viewed from several metres away, across an exhibition hall, a shop floor or an event space, which is a very different reading distance to the screen you're designing it on. What looks readable up close can be illegible from across a room, which is why a design that looked fine while you were working on it can genuinely disappoint once it's actually printed and standing at full size in a real venue.

One clear message, not several

A roller banner works best with a single, bold headline and minimal supporting text, your name, what you do, and one call to action. Trying to fit a full list of services or several paragraphs onto a banner means nobody reads any of it properly from a distance, and a banner trying to say everything usually ends up saying nothing clearly.

Text size and placement

Keep the most important text in the top two-thirds of the banner, since the bottom section is often partly obscured by people standing near it or by the banner's own stand and base. Text size should be large enough to read comfortably from at least three to four metres away, and it's worth printing a test at actual size, or at least measuring the text height on screen against the banner's real dimensions, rather than judging legibility from a small preview.

Colour and contrast

High contrast between text and background matters more on a roller banner than colour choice alone, since a banner is often viewed under variable lighting and from an angle. Dark text on a light background, or light text on a dark background, generally reads more reliably than a busy multi-colour design.

Don't forget close-up viewing entirely

Even though a roller banner is primarily read from a distance, people who do stop directly in front of it will look more closely, so it's worth including a small amount of finer detail lower down, a website address, social handle or QR code, for that closer audience without letting it interfere with the main, distance-readable message above it.
