How Viewing Distance Should Determine Your Poster Size

The mistake of sizing a poster to the wall, not the viewer

It is tempting to choose a poster size based purely on the space available, a noticeboard, a shop window, a stand at an event, but the more useful question is how far away people will actually be standing when they read it. A poster that looks perfectly sized on a wall can be far too small to read comfortably from the distance people will actually view it from.

Close-up viewing: A2 and smaller

For a poster viewed up close, in a shop window someone stops in front of, on a counter, or on a noticeboard people walk right up to, A2 or smaller sizes work well. At this distance, detailed text and finer design elements remain legible, so you can fit more information without the poster becoming cluttered or hard to read.

Mid-distance viewing: A1

A1 suits a poster viewed from a few metres away, across a room, a retail floor or an event space where people are not standing directly in front of it. Text and key visual elements need to be a little bolder and simpler than a close-up poster to remain legible at this distance, with less reliance on fine detail.

Long-distance viewing: A0

A0 is the largest standard poster size and suits display where people will see it from a genuine distance, across a large hall, from the far side of a room, or mounted high up where it needs to draw attention rather than be read in detail up close. At this size, a bold headline and a simple, high-contrast design read far better than a poster trying to pack in dense text.

A practical rule of thumb

As a general guide, text should be legible at roughly ten times its height in viewing distance, so larger lettering is needed as the size increases and the expected viewing distance grows. Using more than one size for the same campaign

For a single event or promotion, it is common to need more than one poster size at once: an A0 or A1 for a prominent entrance or main display, alongside smaller A2 posters for noticeboards, counters or secondary locations around the same venue. Keeping the design consistent across sizes, rather than simply shrinking the large version, means each size can be adjusted so text and detail stay legible at its own intended viewing distance.
