Laminated vs Standard Menus: Which Should You Choose?
Menus get handled more than almost any other printed item in a restaurant or cafe, passed between tables, wiped down, occasionally spilled on. The right material depends mostly on how often your menu changes and how it's actually used day to day.
Laminated menus
A laminated finish makes a menu wipeable and considerably more durable against spills, grease and repeated handling. It's the practical choice for a venue with a fixed or rarely-changing menu, since the upfront cost is higher but the menu lasts far longer in daily use, reducing how often you need to reprint.
Standard paper menus
Unlaminated paper is more affordable and quicker to produce, which suits a venue that changes its menu often, seasonal dishes, daily specials, or a menu that's genuinely disposable and reprinted regularly. It won't survive spills or heavy handling the way a laminated menu will, so it's better suited to single-use or short-term situations.
A middle ground: reprint frequently, but keep cost sensible
Some venues split the difference: a laminated core menu for dishes that rarely change, alongside a simple, cheaply reprinted paper insert for specials or seasonal items that change weekly. This avoids relaminating the whole menu every time one dish changes.
Food-safe considerations
If your menu will be in direct contact with food or handled with wet or greasy hands regularly, ask about food-safe lamination and printing specifically, standard finishes aren't always appropriate for that level of contact.

Cost over time, not just upfront
A laminated menu costs more per copy initially, but if it lasts months rather than weeks in daily use, the cost per week of use can actually work out lower than repeatedly reprinting a cheaper paper menu. Think about total cost over the menu's realistic lifespan, not just the price of a single print run.
Design considerations for either option
Whichever material you choose, clear pricing, legible fonts and a logical layout help customers order faster and reduce staff time spent answering questions about the menu. A cluttered, hard-to-read menu undermines even the most durable material.

Seasonal and special menus
For a one-off seasonal menu, a festive period or a special event, standard paper printed in a smaller quantity is usually more sensible than laminating something you'll only use for a few weeks, saving the laminated option for your core, longer-running menu.
