Loyalty Card Design Ideas That Get Used
Why some loyalty cards get used and others get binned
A loyalty card only works if a customer keeps it in their wallet and remembers to bring it back, which comes down to design decisions as much as the offer itself. A cluttered, hard-to-read card, or one that feels flimsy after a few uses, is easy to lose or throw away, no matter how good the reward is.
Keep the offer immediately clear
The reward should be obvious at a glance: how many stamps or visits are needed and what the customer gets. Burying the offer in small print, or making the card visually busy with too much other information, makes it harder for a customer to feel motivated by their progress each time they visit.
Design a stamp or punch grid that is easy to track
If your loyalty scheme uses a stamp or punch card format, the grid itself deserves real design attention: clearly numbered or spaced boxes, enough room for a visible stamp mark, and a grid size that matches a realistic number of visits. A grid that is too large can feel unachievable, while one that is too small undersells a generous offer.
Durability matters more than it seems
A loyalty card gets pulled out of a wallet repeatedly over weeks or months, so a flimsy, thin card wears out, bends or becomes illegible before the customer completes it. A heavier card stock, ideally with a laminate finish, survives handling far better than a standard thin print, and it is worth the modest extra cost for something meant to last through repeat use.
Numbering and personalising cards
Sequentially numbered cards make it easy to track a scheme and spot duplicated or copied cards, which is worth considering for a popular offer. Star Printers can add sequential numbering to a loyalty card print run at the point of ordering.
Card size and pocket fit
A loyalty card printed at the standard business card size, 85mm x 55mm, fits alongside other cards in a wallet or card holder without needing its own space, which sounds minor but genuinely affects whether a customer keeps carrying it. An unusually large or oddly shaped card is more likely to be left at home or thrown away simply because it does not fit where a customer already keeps their regular cards.
