Matte vs Gloss vs Silk Lamination: Which Business Card Finish Is Right for You?

What lamination actually does

Lamination is a thin protective layer applied over printed card, and beyond protection it changes how the printed colours and images actually look and feel. The three common options for business cards are matt, gloss and silk, and each gives a genuinely different result from identical artwork, so the finish is worth deciding deliberately rather than as an afterthought.

Matt lamination

Matt gives a flat, non-reflective surface with a soft, slightly textured feel under the fingers. It is the most fingerprint and smudge-resistant of the three finishes, which makes it a practical choice for a card that will be handled a lot, and it tends to make darker colours look rich rather than flat. The trade-off is that very bright or vivid colours can look slightly more muted than they would under gloss.

Gloss lamination

Gloss is the shiniest, most reflective finish, and it makes colours and photography look vivid and saturated, which suits a card with strong imagery or bold branding. The reflective surface does show fingerprints and light scratches more readily than matt or silk, so it is worth considering how the card will be carried and handled before choosing gloss for a card that needs to look pristine weeks after printing.

Silk lamination

Silk sits between matt and gloss, with a soft sheen rather than a flat or fully reflective surface. It resists fingerprints better than gloss while still giving colours more vibrancy than matt, which is why it is often picked as a middle-ground option when a client cannot decide between the other two. It also has a distinctive smooth, almost fabric-like feel that reads as premium.

Choosing based on how the card will be used

If your card will be handled constantly, in a wallet, at networking events, handed back and forth, matt or silk generally age better than gloss. If the card is more about a strong first visual impression, a portfolio piece, a striking logo, or photography-led design, gloss or silk both make artwork pop.
