It's worth briefly noting on the back of a card you receive what you discussed, so your own follow-up later is specific rather than generic.

Following up while it's still fresh

A card exchanged at an event is most useful in the days immediately after, while the conversation is still fresh for both people, a follow-up message weeks later, when a card is just one of many collected, tends to get a much weaker response.
