Foam Board vs Correx vs Dibond: Choosing the Right Signage Material

Three materials, three different jobs

Foam board, Correx and Dibond all serve as a base for printed signage, but they are built for different situations, and choosing based on price alone often means replacing a sign sooner than expected.

Foam board

Foam board is lightweight and inexpensive, making it a good fit for indoor use, presentations, exhibitions and short-term displays. It is not weather-resistant and will warp or degrade if used outdoors or somewhere damp, so treat it as an indoor or one-off event material rather than permanent signage. Its light weight also makes it easy to handle and transport, which suits a display that gets moved between venues or set up and taken down repeatedly.

Correx

Correx is a corrugated plastic board, lightweight but noticeably more durable and weather-resistant than foam board, which is why it is the standard choice for temporary outdoor signage such as estate agent boards and event signs. It handles rain and wind reasonably well but is still a temporary rather than permanent material, and its fluted internal structure, visible from the cut edge, is what gives it both its light weight and its resistance to bending.

Dibond

Dibond is an aluminium composite board, rigid and significantly more durable than either foam board or Correx, suited to long-term or permanent outdoor signage. It costs more than Correx but holds up to years of outdoor exposure rather than months, which makes it the better value choice for a sign you do not want to replace regularly. Its rigidity also means it hangs flatter over time than lighter materials, which can start to bow or warp slightly after extended outdoor exposure.

Thickness and finish options

Beyond the base material, thickness affects both rigidity and price, a thicker board resists bending and looks more substantial when mounted, but adds weight and cost that isn't always necessary for a small sign. Foam board is typically supplied in a single common thickness, while Correx and Dibond both come in a small range, so it's worth confirming what's practical for your sign size and how it will be fixed in place before ordering.
